What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is specifically concerned with the aesthetic appearance of the teeth and gums. By working with a cosmetic dentist, you can give your entire mouth a makeover, regaining confidence in your own smile.

The role of the cosmetic dentist is to listen carefully to the patient’s wishes, concerns, and expectations, then to develop a treatment plan that will provide the desired outcome. In some cases, this can be as simple as teeth whitening. In other instances, it may require concealing or replacing broken teeth, addressing problems with the gums, or correcting issues of tooth alignment.

Am I a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry?

The best way to determine whether you are a good candidate for cosmetic dental work is to join us at State Street Dental for a one-on-one consultation. Dr. Mee will listen carefully to your goals and also perform a quick oral health inventory to ensure you are eligible for a safe, successful procedure.

Generally, the best candidates for cosmetic dentistry:

  • Are looking to correct or conceal aesthetic problems with their teeth or gums.
  • Are in good health overall and do not have untreated periodontal disease.
  • Have spoken with a dentist and have reasonable expectations about the procedure.

The Consultation Experience

Your cosmetic dental experience will always begin with a one-on-one consultation. During this appointment, you will meet individually with Dr. Mee in a relaxed and comfortable setting. Dr. Mee will use this time to listen carefully to your expectations and goals. He will then explain some of the treatment options that are available and answer any questions you may have.

If you decide to move forward with cosmetic dental care, Dr. Mee and his team will take some photos and impressions, ensuring results that look and feel completely natural. Additionally, our lab may need to create some molds, ensuring that your new smile is a perfect fit within your mouth.

During your consultation, we can even allow you to try on a “trial smile,” ensuring you have a good sense of what your final outcome is going to be.

Our Cosmetic Dentistry Services

Every patient has different goals and a different set of circumstances. For this reason, we do not believe in “one size fits all” solutions. Instead, our cosmetic dentistry treatments are always custom-tailored to match the individual client.

Are you dissatisfied with the appearance of your teeth? If so, you may be a good candidate for dental veneers. Porcelain veneers are essentially thin shells adhered to the front of your naturally growing teeth. Generally, veneers can be attached with very little reduction of your natural teeth enamel.

Veneers can completely cover your teeth and conceal their appearance, allowing you to hide imperfections such as staining and discoloration, chips, cracks, erosion, and even certain misalignment issues.

Dr. Mee is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and has received extra education in cosmetic dental procedures. He has ample experience providing dental veneers for his patients.

The Benefits of Dental Veneers

Some reasons to consider porcelain veneers include:

  • Application of veneers requires very little advanced preparation, and in some cases, may not require sedation.
  • Veneers offer a quick way to address issues with your teeth. Most patients will require just three or four visits over the course of about three weeks.
  • Your veneers will be custom-made to provide you with completely natural-looking results.
  • The materials used to make veneers are durable and stain-resistant. For most patients, veneers will last for at least 15 to 20 years.

Cosmetic Bonding

Another option for patients to consider is cosmetic bonding. This process has been around for decades and is used to restore teeth that have been affected by gaps, chips, stains, cracks, and even slight misalignment.

Essentially, a composite resin material made to match the shade of the tooth is applied and shaped, then cured with light. The composite is then polished to give the appearance of a natural high shine. The end result? A restored smile and a simple solution to cracked or badly stained teeth.

Teeth Whitening

For some patients, the simplest way to restore confidence in their smile is with tooth whitening. Dr. Mee and his team can provide patients with treatment via advanced, clinical-grade tooth whitening formulas. Results may be discernible after a single treatment, while recurring maintenance visits will allow you to keep those pearly whites looking fresh and vibrant.

For some patients, the issues with the teeth involve development defects. For example, you may be dissatisfied with your smile due to misaligned teeth, overbites, underbites, big gaps, or crowding.

These issues can be addressed with conventional braces, but Invisalign offers an even better approach: Faster-acting, less painful, and less conspicuous. Dr. Mee is a certified Invisalign provider and is here to answer any additional questions you may have about your Invisalign eligibility.

Will My Cosmetic Dentistry Procedure Be Painful?

One of the most common questions we hear from our patients is whether their cosmetic work will cause them any pain. Rest assured that your comfort is one of our foremost concerns, and as such, we provide a range of sedation options as needed.

While not all cosmetic procedures require sedation, we are always happy to talk with patients about the options available for managing their pain levels, as well as any anxiety they may feel regarding a trip to the dentist. With any questions about sedation dentistry, please reach out to State Street Dental at any time.
